Batteries, Lamps, Medicine and Clothes 특수 수거함

Short answer: batteries, fluorescent lamps and LED bulbs, medicine and clean clothes each have their own collection boxes — at community service centres (주민센터), apartment complexes, health centres and on the street.

Batteries and power banks

Put them in a battery collection box (폐건전지 수거함) — at community service centres (주민센터), apartment complexes, schools, and electronics and watch shops. Power banks and rechargeable batteries go here too, never in a waste bag: lithium batteries can start fires.

Fluorescent lamps and LED bulbs

Unbroken fluorescent lamps and bulb- or tube-shaped LEDs go in a lamp collection box (폐형광등 수거함) at the 주민센터 or your apartment complex. Broken lamps go in the general waste bag, wrapped (larger amounts: special sack).

Medicine

Medicine must not go in the bin or down the toilet. Use a medicine collection box (폐의약품 수거함) at community service centres, district offices and health centres. In Seoul, solid medicine can also go in a red post box in an envelope marked 폐의약품 — but not liquids, eye drops or ointments. Vitamins and supplements are not medicine: general waste bag.

Clothes and shoes

Clean, wearable clothes and shoes go in a clothing collection bin (의류수거함); keep them dry in a bag. Worn-out clothes, bags and pillows go in the general waste bag; duvets and cushions are large waste.
