Food Waste in Korea 음식물 쓰레기

Short answer: food waste goes in your building’s food waste bin, a card-reader (RFID) bin or a special food waste bag, drained — but bones, shells, fruit pits, onion skins and tea bags are general waste.

Food waste — 음식물 쓰레기 (eumsingmul sseuregi) — is collected separately because it is made into animal feed and compost. That is why anything an animal could not eat, or that would break the machines, is not food waste.
